Reading Facilities:
The readers have open access to journals and books. Calm
ambience of the reading room and the rich collection of the
library help to promote scholarly endeavours of the scientists
and research fellows.
Circulation of Materials:
Readers may borrow books and journals for home for a stipulated
period of time. Daily issue is also done for reference purpose
and library norm proposes returning the documents by the end of
the day.
Online Journals / Resources :
To meet the demands of the scientists for nascent information,
NICED Library is increasing its online resources of journals and
books. It subscribes to Blackwell journals, ASM journals online
and databases like Science Direct. Apart from these its
resources include the online journals available through ERMED
Consortium joined by ICMR. NICED is thus able to access 1500
full text online journals that this consortium offers enriching
its online resources. ICMR has also formed its own consortium.
JCCC-ICMR is an extension of J-Gate Custom Content (JCC), for
the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR). It covers 693
full text journals received collectively at 24 institutions/centres
of ICMR and 215 open access journals.
Books :
NICED being a research Institute, the collection
of journals outweigh that of the books. But the library
maintains a core collection of books in specialised biomedical
areas like Microbiology, Biochemistry, Parasitology,
Pathophysiology, Immunology etc.
Databank search:
The library has built up a bibliographic
databank collection from different databases catering to the
needs of the scientific pursuit.
Computers in the Library:
The library is equipped with 6 computers having 24 hours
internet connection. This facility helps the researchers to surf
the Internet as and when required for their reference purpose.
Photocopying:
The library has a photocopier and it provides photocopying
service to its users free of charge. It also provides
photocopies to outside users like summer trainees, visitors,
research scholars etc coming from all over India. For Inter
Library Loan of documents, photocopied documents are provided to
the loanee library.
Inter Library Loan:
NICED Library has a rich resource of journals in particular and
serves to fulfill the needs of ICMR libraries in the Eastern
region of India. However, its Inter-library loan service is not
only restricted to the ICMR Institutes but also to the
Biomedical Institutes in and around Kolkata.
External Users / Visitors:
NICED has collaborations with different national and
international institutes of repute. Scientists and visitors from
different institutes abroad regularly visit the library.
University scholars, summer trainees coming from different parts
of India get their training from NICED and use the resources of
the library for their scholarly needs. For details, contact

Role of the Library Staff in Helping Users:
NICED library is a specialized library catering to the
specialized group of users- scientists of the Institute and
research fellows are always in demand of very specific
information. The library staffs are well-equipped with the
modern technology and have a good idea of the information
sources wherefrom they serve the needs of the users. They have a
sound skill in information transfer process and do so
effectively and efficiently.
